Heat Transport Example p. 161

Post by Horst » Fri Jan 13, 2012 2:04 pm

Hello,

I am currently reading the Soil Physics with Hydrus book and enjoy it very much. I have reproduced the example given in the chapter "Heat Flow in Soils" from p. 161-166 (I use Hydrus 1-D, version 4.14).
What puzzles me is that the temperatures in 10 and 50 cm are lower in my simulation, than the ones given in the book (Fig. 4.23 and 4.24). When I change the default values of the heat capacities in my input I am able to reproduce the graphs given in the book.
Have the default values of the heat capacities been changed from version 4.0 (the one used for the book) to version 4.14 (which I used)?

Thaks and greetings

Horst

You are correct that the heat parameters used in the book are different. This point covered in the item for page 176 in the textbook errata on the book website at http://pc-progress.com/en/Default.aspx?h3d-book. This item says "If problem 7 is run as described in the text, the temperatures in the graphs may look slightly different from Fig. 4.23 & 4.24 due to values for Cn, Co, and Cw in the Heat Parameters window; the textbook used values of 3.98E+010, 5.20E+010, and 8.66E+010."

Thank you for the remark about the errata. I did not know it existed.

You cannot download the text of the book (posting it would be a violation of our copyright agreement with the publisher). Only the various examples that are developed in the book. J.
