HYDRUS short course: March 1-3, 2022

“Modeling of water flow and contaminant transport in porous media using the HYDRUS software packages”

Participants will get a PDF file with all lectures and tutorial instructions, as well as online access to all carried out examples.

Detailed Program:

Day 1: Morning (8:00 - 12:30), with focus on HYDRUS-1D

Format Description
Set up: Registration and set up.
Lecture 1: Vadose zone flow and transport modeling: An overview.
Lecture 2: The HYDRUS-1D software for simulating one-dimensional variably-saturated water flow and solute transport.
Computer session 1: HYDRUS-1D: Infiltration of water into a one-dimensional soil profile.

Day 1: Afternoon (14:00 - 18:00)

Format Description
Lecture 3: On the characterization and measurement of the hydraulic properties of unsaturated porous media.
Lecture 4: Application of the finite element method to variably-saturated water flow and solute transport.
Computer session 2: HYDRUS-1D: Annual water flow and solute transport in a layered soil profile.

Day 2: Morning (8:30 - 12:00), with focus on HYDRUS (2D/3D)

Format Description
Lecture 5: Introduction to inverse modeling; application of HYDRUS-1D to laboratory and field experiments.
Computer session 3: HYDRUS-1D: Parameter estimation using onestep or multistep outflow experiment.
Lecture 6: HYDRUS (2D/3D) software for simulating two- and three-dimensional variably-saturated water flow and solute transport, Version 3. Domain Types.

Day 2: Afternoon (14:00 - 17:30)

Format Description
Computer session 4: HYDRUS (2D/3D): Subsurface line source.
Computer session 5: HYDRUS (2D/3D): HYDRUS (2D/3D): Furrow infiltration with a solute pulse (may be skipped, depending on time).
Computer session 6: HYDRUS (2D/3D): Flow and transport in a transect to a stream.
Computer session 7: HYDRUS (2D/3D): Three-Dimensional Water Flow and Solute Transport (may be skipped, depending on time).

Day 2: Late Afternoon (18:00 - 19:00)

Format Description
Guest Lecture: Guest Lecture by Dr. Rien van Genuchten.

Day 3: Morning (8:30 - 12:00), with focus on special HYDRUS modules, such as UNSATCHEM

Format Description
Lecture 7: Overview of multicomponent biogeochemical transport modeling using the HYDRUS computer software packages, e.g., with the UNSATCHEM, HP1, and Wetland Modules.
Computer session 8: HYDRUS-1D: Modeling Salinity with H1D.
Computer session 9: UNSATCHEM: Modeling Salinity with UNSATCHEM.
Lecture 8: Review of standard and non-standard HYDRUS modules (e.g., HP1, UnsatChem, Wetland, C-Ride, DualPerm, Slope Cube) and standard applications.

Day 3: Afternoon (14:00 - 16:00)

Format Description
General session: Guest lectures by Salini Sasidharan, Giuseppe Brunetti, Amit Paporisch and Shani Ben Moshe with the focus on HYDRUS applications.
